Acis & Galatea – a tragic love story

Acis & Galatea

At the Fontaine Médecis in Jardin du Luxembourg you can see the statues of the lovers Acis (the spirit of the Acis River in Sicily) and his beloved sea-nymph, Galatea (she who is milk-white) from the Greek mythology. A sad love story though, the Sicilian Cyclops Polyphemus, a jealous suitor, killed Acis and the distraught Galatea turned the blood of Acis into the river Acis. In the photos below you can see Cyclops Polyphemus behind the love-couple and the water in the fontaine symbolises the river with the blood of Galatea.
