Biking in Paris

place-de-la-concordePlace de la Concorde – the place of chaos I have to ride through twice a day to get to work. Our office is located at Place de la Madeleine, you can see the Madeleine church in the background. The first times I had to bike through the war zone I just wanted to close my eyes and hope would arrive alive on the other side. Nobody is following the rules…motorcycles and scooters in full speed on both sides of me, bumpy ground and I try to have a good grip on my bike (the cobblestones doesn’t make it easy), this is not the place to lose balance or to make a small turn to the left or right….the other vehicles are too close to me and in full speed they would never have the chance to swerve to avoid an accident.

Not long ago when I was on my bike waiting for the green lights, a man on his huge Harley Davidson, wearing a helmet, was next to me had a look on me from top to toe. “Vous êtes courageux….et en plus, sans casque”.  Brave and without helmet..I would rather say dumb? This unusual encounter made a bell ringing and maybe it’s about time to wear a helmet?
