La Chascona – the sweet bohemian café where they serve the most delicious banoffee pie ever! Antwerp is the place you need to go in order to have enjoy it :-)
I’ve been in Antwerp several times, last time was in June last year (which reminds me I still haven’t shared my photos with you yet…hopefully very soon!) and each time I make sure to visit La Chascona to have my dose of their so yummie hot chocolates and their homemade cakes and pies. I’m not the one sitting at Starbucks or another coffee chain eating pies and cakes containing more than 50 ingredients including preservatives, artificial colourings, flavors etc…a REAL cake never needs a list of crap that in the end isn’t even good for your body. No, I prefer homemade cakes and pies containing real ingredients and baked with love <3
Anyway, back to La Chascona, on the photos you can see me having a banoffe pie that consists of a base made of biscuits and butter, sliced bananas twirled with toffee, fluffy whipped cream and topped with cocoa powder. Their banoffee pie in itself can make me go to Antwerp for a weekend, that’s how good it is :-) The hot chocolate I had was based on boiled milk with a few chocolate pieces melting in the bottom of the glass…topped with lots…lots of heavenly whipped cream…as if it wasn’t enough, sweet roasted fine chopped nuts sprinkled on top. I went there three times during my weekend there last year, I think that kind of says it all :-)
It’s situated not far away from my favourite street, Kloosterstraat (where you find lot’s of antique shops).
Oh, and a detail I forgot, you can not only buy coffee, hot chocolate, pies and cakes…you can acctually buy the chair you’re sitting on or another furniture – if the pricetag allows you ;-) The owners take cares of neglected furnitures and other objects, after repairing and giving them some true love you can find the objects in their café, things they would like to keep are tagged with extremely high prices – ofcourse ;-)
La Chascona – Oever 18 , 2000 Antwerpen
Life is full of colors and I keep on adding some to my life …..
(I took these photos were taken when I was in Antwerp in June 2012)
I love them…no matter how dirty or trashy they gets…they’ve been my true fellows in good and bad. I took this photo when I was in Antwerp not long ago. My boots, my silent witnesses.
Came back from a wonderful longweekend in Antwerp late last night. Wish I could stay there longer but work is calling. Discovered many new things, had a great time enjoying myself with this and that…and took lots of photos. Ofcourse I will share my Antwerp weekend with you…in a while ;-) When I was there I came up with the conclusion that I love Paris but Antwerp comes on 2nd place…it’s a city I could go and visit 2-3 times a year.
Off to Belgium for a long weekend in Antwerp!
Finally I’m done with my guide and I’ve printed it and I’m ready to explore Antwerp once again :-) I’m leaving now and I’ll be back on Sunday evening.
I’ll be staying in an old, rough, vintage artistic house just next to my favourite street Kloosterstraat. On Friday morning (tomorrow) I’ll be visiting the Vrijdagmarkt, a Friday market with old furnitures and antiques, the Vogelenmarkt (also a market) on Sunday and Lijnwaadmarkt (an antiques market on Saturday). When I will not be digging and admiring old objects and antiques I’m going to visit the Diamondland, a 1000m2 diamond showroom where I will see professional diamond polishers and setters at work so that I can see how diamonds are made :-)
I’m very fascinated and intrested in paintings by Peter Paul Rubens who was a Flemish Baroque painter well-known for his Counter-Reformation altarpieces and history paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects. I will therefore visit Rubens House and St James church where some of his work can be found and where his grave is.
Since the Royal of fine Arts in Antwerp is closed for renovation some of their paintings have been placed in the Cathedral of Our Lady which I will be visiting instead.
Some fashionshops I’ll be visiting are Ann Demeluemeester‘s and Dries Van Noten’s and Renaissance…
Oh, I will be eating alot too! A dinner reservation has been made for me at Ra for their Villa Villekulla dinner, I’ve been there before and I love the place! Also I will be going to La Chascona…also been there before..but I always go back to a place where they serve the most delicious cakes and smoothies, ofcourse ;-)
I will also try to find a place where they serve the best mussels….and also have delicious Belgian chocolate….and Belgian waffles!
With other words…an intensive weekend awaits for me in Antwerp :-) Will be back on Sunday but I’ve made some time-scheduled posts until then ;-)
