In Tuscany every place you will be visiting is set against a dreamy backdrop of rolling hills in different shades of green or brown depending on the season. The region embraces tranquility and beauty you have not seen elsewhere, here you will want to slow down to enjoy it fully.
Always keen in finding authentic and places with a past, La Suvera, an ancient medieval fortress filled with history, became a natural choice for us when looking for an accommodation in Tuscany for my weekend holiday. Nestled in top of a hill with panoramic views over the Tuscan landscape, an oasis of calm surrounded by lush trees, this unique and charming place is perfect to find calm after a day of exploring its nearby attractions. Together with Francesco Gola I had the opportunity to experience a stay at this luxurious Boutique Hotel and Relais totally out of this world.
A unique and charming boutique hotel nestled in top of a hill with panoramic views over the Tuscan landscape
The story behind La Suvera dates back until the High Middle Ages and during a period the fortress belonged to Julius Della Rovere, Pope Julius II as we know him, that commissioned the talented artist Michelangelo to paint the sublime ceiling and walls of the Sistine Chapel in the Vaticans, in Rome. Today La Suvera is owned by the Marquis Ricci’s family. Twenty years after a thoroughly renovation with care and dedication, Marchese Giuseppe Ricci and his wife Princess Eleonora Massimo decided to open up the doors of this former medieval fortress sharing their family history with their guests. Today they run this enchanting place together with their daughter Elena and her family.
La Suvera – Luxurious 5-star Boutique Hotel & Relais
La Suvera is more than a 5-star hotel, it is a living museum immersed in history with an extraordinary story and it offers a truly memorable experience. It is an ideal location to explore Tuscany, visit nearby villages such as the medieval hill town San Gimignano and take part of local activities such as wine and cheese-tasting.
The buildings of Relais La Suvera are renaissance architectural wonders featuring frescoes on the ceilings and the gardens have perfectly manicured lawns and beautiful sculptures and other artifacts including a giant screen bell covering a fountain in the garden in front of a medieval church.
Featuring it’s own restaurant, museum, chapel, 12 suites and 24 rooms , spa, swimming pool and years of history you will have to look hard to find a similar place.
The rooms and suites are all unique and carefully decorated with special attention to details. You’re simply stepping into a museum with the great benefit that you actually can stay over the night totally surrounded by collections of family treasures such as antiquities and memorabilia of the Ricci family that has been gathered for centuries. Each and every room are dedicated to a historical character that has been in relation to the properties families making the feeling of staying even more special.
A stay at La Suvera is not complete without a dinner at their own restaurant, Oliviera. It deserves a separate post and you can read about our experience here together with the tasty breakfast we indulged ourselves with in the morning.
On the grounds you’ll find a swimming pool with heated water, 26°C, that you can enjoy during the months of June to September. We did not step into it as I found the weather to be cold, but it looked very peaceful and secluded framed by cypress, wisteria and linden trees. Instead the Spa Balneaum was more a tempting choice, embraced by the warm water in the hydro massage pool set in an ancient medieval water storage cistern. Absolutely a must if you want to spoil yourself with some relaxing quality time for the body and mind.
Staying at La Suvera was more than just a luxurious hotel experience, we had the feeling of staying in a magnificent living museum, a place where history delightfully is merged with modern amenities. The hotel staff were very attentive and friendly, we felt welcome at the very first moment we entered the gates of this elegant Boutique Hotel and Relais. The staff helped us with our luggage and were very professional, accommodating and non-intrusive. We enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere which added a feeling of a home away from home. It is definitely a place you would remember and long for to return.
