The vineyard Domaine de Daley is more than 700 years old and during a trip to Switzerland not long ago we spent the afternoon for a wine tour and a wine tasting.
Did you know that Lavaux wine region, the area stretching from Lausanne to Montreux is pretty much covered with terraces vineyards? If you do a trip to Lausanne, you simply should not miss to visit one or some of the many wineries along the lake. It’s not surprising this amazingly beautiful area is an UNESCO world heritage. What makes this place so special? The fact that the region also goes under the name “Land of Three Suns”. Yes! Here the vineyards are spoiled by the sun. Firstly they grow with the sun from the sky, but as you have the lake Leman just below the sun is reflected from the lake towards the vineyards..and as if this is not enough, the vines gets a goodnight kiss through the heat from the stone walls on the terraces that has been absorbing the heat from the sun during the day. Not bad ;-)
With three suns this UNESCO world heritage site facing the turquoise Lac Leman is therefore the perfect area to grow grapes on. If you have the opportunity I can truly recommend visiting one or several vineyards in this region. Not long ago we spent a wonderful afternoon at the vineyard Daley with a spectacular view over the lake. Daley is a vineyard with a long history as it was founded already in 1392 which makes it the oldest vineyard in this region.
Wine tasting in Lavaux with a breathtaking lake view and my dearest, perfect way to spend an afternoon at on one of the many vineyards facing the Lac Leman
We were warmly welcomed and began our private tour right after our arrival, outside near their wine cellar. Daley has 15 hectares of vines and all their wines comes from their vines on the property of 15 hectares, hand-picked during harvesting, matured and bottled on the estate.
After our tour we took a seat on their terrace enjoying the view over the vineyards and the glittering lake in the sun. You could not have asked for a better view. There are different wine tasting packages and you can find them all on their website. We opted for tasting three different wines:
Le Chasselas Tradition – Grand Cru de Villette
This delicate wine is matured in a tun during 10-11 months and has a fine touch of citrus fruits and apples.
Le Chardonnay Grande Réserve – Grand Cru de Villette
Powerful wine from a small production with a fine touch of citrus fruits.
Le Mérsyca Grande Réserve – Grand Cru de St-Saphorin
A blend of the grape varietes Merlot and Cabernet Franc with a touch of Syrah, matured in barrels for 22 months.
I warmly recommend you to visit Domaine du Daley if you plan to travel to Lavaux. Not only because it’s long history but for their very tasty wines and the amazing lake view you have from their terrace. Don’t forget to have a look in their shop where you can buy a bottle and enjoy their wine at home or why not as a gift to a friend?
