Christmas is approaching and since things are about to get busy I was more than happy when my friend Anne asked me to join her for a Christmas Afternoon Tea at the fabulous and charming 5-star hotel, l’Hotel, a luxurious romantic gem well hidden and located on an almost secret location in St Germain.
This historic hotel, formely named Hotel d’Alsace was were Oscar Wilde spent his two last years and it has also attracted numerous celebrities, such as Elisabeth Taylor, Frank Sinatra and Grace Kelly back in the time. With it’s 20 bedrooms, all with a unique decoration, it is an intimate and very cosy boutique hotel.
A romantic gem well hidden and located on an almost secret location in St Germain
The Christmas Afternoon Tea at l’Hotel is created by the Head Pastry Chef Joana Thöny Montbabut and it was a true pleasure to see how she had incorporated the lovely Christmas flavours in the different sweet treats.
After a warm welcoming we had been seated in a velvety salon and were offered a glass of sparkling Champagne. It felt stepping back in time sitting in the red velvet chairs in the salon filled with antiques and ancient paintings. It was easy to tell the signature style of the interior designer Jacques Garcia that had created the relaxed, romantic and intimate atmosphere using lots of velvet and details such as silk tassels.
We got to select our hot beverage, Anne opted for a hot chocolate whereas I asked for a cup with the Mint White Tea, from the Japanese brand Lupicia known for their fresh and fine quality tea. Short after, an Afternoon Tee stand with 3-tiers was placed on our table with a fresh and tasty assortiment of delicate sandwiches and savouries. A sandwich with cucumber and mint which was very light and refreshing, a navette with smoked salmon and dill which was delicious and a small savoury cake with herbs and cheese. When we were finished with the savouries our water came by with a cart with three different Christmas cakes. It was not easy to choose, they all looked heavenly, but in the end I made up my mind and asked for a slice of the hazelnut and lime cake. The other tiers on the Afternoon Tea stand were filled with sweet treats such as a delicious Gingerbread Man, a biscuit with red frosting, a Mont-Blanc in the shape of a cute Christmas Tree, the classical Yule Log (traditional Christmas cake with coffee and chocolate), a Snow Star (small sandwich made of two speculoos biscuits filled with gianduja cream, a Chocolate Truffle that was out of heaven (infused with Earl Grey Tea) and the most cutest pink gift, a fluffy griotte and cherry marshmallow. I must admit I cheated, I did not eat all the sweets, instead I asked to have a few of them in a doggy bag, to bring with me..and extended the sweet experience at home.
The traditional English scones we had in the very end accompagnied with lemon infused mascarpone cream and strawberry jam were very delicious and simply the perfect ending of our long Afternoon Tea. Yes, after having a look on the clock it turned out we had been there for 2,5 hours (!). But after all I believe that was what we both needed, a well-deserved break while endulging in sweet treats in great company and in a beautiful place such as l’Hotel.
