With or without water, the two fountains at Place de la Concorde are always an eye catcher. Jacques Ignace Hittorff, the designer behind the Fontaines de la Concorde was influenced by the fountains in Rome, in particular Piazza Navona and Piazza San Pietro, and had twelve different sculptors working on these fountains that were completed in 1840.
The Place de la Concorde is surrounded by an unceasing stream of vehicles throughout the day that it’s difficult to admire these fountains in peace…but maybe that would be too much to ask for when this square where many people among them Louis XVI, Charlotte Corday, Danton and Marie Antoinette were executed?
